David Byron Bonk, age 50, of Burnsville & formerly of Buffalo passed away on Saturday, June 20th, 2009 at North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale.
He was born on April 12, 1959 in Buffalo the son of Byron T. & Mavis J. Sherva Bonk.
David was baptized on May 31, 1959 at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Buffalo.
He was also instructed in the Lutheran Catechism and confirmed in the Christian faith on May 6, 1973 at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church.
He graduated from Buffalo High School in 1977. David later attended Willmar Community College for two years and spent two years at St. Cloud State receiving a degree in 1981 in Recreational Park Management.
While in High School, David was on the wrestling, baseball and football teams. He was named Minnesota State Champion Wrestler at 138 pounds in 1977. While attending Willmar and St. Cloud, David was named an All American Wrestler at both colleges.
David was employed for many years at Northwest Asphalt, Inc. as a paver operator. He also was a long time member of Operating Engineers-Local # 49.
David thoroughly enjoyed sports, spending time with family & friends, fishing, cooking and grilling.
Survived by his loving son: SSGT Corey Bonk, USMC, Camp Pendleton, California; parents: Byron & Mavis Bonk of Gaylord; a sister: Julie (Kent) Haegele of Maple Lake; brothers: Roger Bonk of Buffalo and Doug (Connie) Bonk of Victoria; paternal grandmother: Myrtle Bonk of Buffalo; nieces and nephews: Nichole Haegele & fiancé Munyaradzi, Katie Haegele, Hannah Haegele, Jordan & Callie Bonk, Jill (Jeremy) Boeson and Dan Bonk; grand nephews: Michael & Elias; aunts, uncles, many cousins, other relatives and friends.
Preceded in death by his paternal grandfather: Raywald Bonk, maternal grandparents: Lillian & Garfield Sherva and by two uncles: Jack Bodin and Gerald Sherva.
Funeral services for David Bonk will be held on Sunday, June 28th at 4:00 P.M. at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Buffalo. Pastor Christian Bode will officiate. Private interment Lakeview Cemetery.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, June 28th from 1:00 P.M. until time of services at the Church.
Casket Bearers will be Mike Paurus, Mike Kyllonen, Harry Dinwiddie, Barry Brenny, Christopher Storey and Mark Petron.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
The Peterson Chapel in Buffalo is serving the family.
